After one of the worst launches in recent history and production that has been suspended for more than 6 months I thought the VW Routan was down for the count.
Never underestimate the Germans.
The Volkswagen Routan minivan, which is built at Chrysler's Windsor Assembly Plant, will resume production at the facility in October. Some union sources have been led to believe production could begin as early as September.
But it will only be a trickle compared to when production first ramped up in the 4th quarter of 2008. At that time production was running at 300 units a day. The new plan calls for just 30 units a day.
So far only 1,031 Routans have been sold in Canada and roughly 10,000 in the U.S. despite a production run that resulted in 29,000 units being produced.
The Routan may be one of the most multi-cultural vehicles on the planet. Afterall, it wears a German badge, yet it's built in a Canadian plant run by an American company owned by an Italian automaker.
